For anyone who thinks pugs are so cute and awesome, here’s a picture of the inside of a pug’s mouth, just one of their many deformities which cause these sweet little dogs so much pain because people insist on breeding them for what we think looks good, at their expense. Pugs have the same number of teeth as a long-snouted dog and here’s nature trying to fit all those teeth into such a small space.

I agree it’s sad but ALL purebreed dogs have genetic deformities, ie: bulldogs have to have a cizarian (sp?) due to the pups massive heads and the bitch’s tiny hips :<

Cesarean. I wouldn’t entirely agree. I’d say the vast majority of bench show dogs like the pug, English Bulldog, Neapolitan Mastiff, etc have horrible genetic disorders, but one can avoid most health trouble by finding a WORKING dog breeder who health tests. Between genetic testing for hereditary disorders and strenuous work to prove health you can generally get a very healthy animal (in regard at least to hereditary deformities).
It wasn’t until the bench show world came about and people began breeding for looks that this trouble started. Back in the old days many working dogs were kept outside, 24/7, rain or shine. They had to survive the heat and the cold and most were not vaccinated and lived on a staple of food scraps. They were whelped in the elements and weak pups died or were killed so that the strongest pups survived. Their lives were hard, they had to EARN their keep, and dogs that didn’t work were killed. Some working dogs are still kept like this and I guarantee you, those are the healthiest dogs alive today because they are pure natural selection; the strong survive and pass their genes on to produce more strong pups.

I still think purebreeding as a whole should be stopped. Mutts are fine and dandy and often have less health problems due to their more diverse genes.

I don’t agree. I think that the breeding of worthless showdogs and pet dogs should be stopped, but purebred WORKING dogs will always be needed. Police dogs, hunting dogs, SAR dogs, Protection dogs. Etc.
^ This.
Breeds have been bred for specific reasons - the show ring tosses those reasons out and breeds for confirmation to some made up standards. Working dogs that are bred for specific jobs need to be bred for specific temperament and genetics, and both physical and mental health factor highly into it. Proper breeding of purebred dogs that promotes the breed as a whole rather than trying to force the breed to fit a cookie-cutter shape can be a good thing. Especially when a dog with a specific temperament and constitution is needed.
Like… service dogs. People ever wonder why there are so many purebred service dogs? Because there are certain breeds (i.e. Golden Retrievers, Labradors) which are already better suited to a service dog lifestyle, but which, through proper breeding, can be bred to have even better obedience and temperament which is suited to working with people who have disabilities.
(That is not to say that mixed breeds can’t be service dogs, but you can’t always foresee a mixed-breed’s temperament, especially if you don’t know it’s parents. There are a lot of mixed-breed therapy dogs.)

Everything itsdetachable and en-theo-gen said.

1. Don’t breed or buy while homeless dogs die.
2. Dog’s teeth are severely screwed up and dog can’t breathe and you think it’s FUNNY?
3. Working dogs? Do your own work you fat lazy bastards.

Wow, I  missed part of what en-theo-gen said. No, I don’t think dogs should be kept outside 24/7 in extreme elements, weak puppies killed, dogs that didn’t work well killed… the hell is wrong with you?
You can breed for a standard and make sure a dog is in working condition without flat out abusing and neglecting the fucking animal. You can have breed for standard and looks, for health, and have all that shit in one package. It’s not impossible. The problem is that people are putting looks before health and that is never okay.
Screw getting rid of pet dogs and only having working dogs. Are you serious? The show ring would be an excellent way of selecting dogs that best meet the breed standard if it hadn’t become so damn corrupt. What we should focus on is correcting the world of dog showing and making sure health always comes first. There’s nothing wrong with having dogs as pets and there’s nothing wrong with working dogs either.
Having a dog that wins titles in the show ring for good standard and is healthy and in good working condition would be a good thing.
Also, consumemylovedevourmyhate, watch it, would you? Using fat as an insult is so uncool.
