What’s the difference between animal welfare and animal rights?

I seem to have my own take on this that differs a bit from what you’d find Googling this question.

Animal rights is about granting animals the same rights and equality as humans. Animal rights activists believe that animals should not be ‘used’ in any way, up to and including being kept as pets. They should all be turned free. A good example of some well known animal rights extremist organizations would be People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).

Animal welfare activists don’t believe that animals need ‘rights’, but rather that they need someone to look out for them. We believe in preventing cruelty and suffering to animals, eliminating inhumane practices and uses of them (some may overlap with animal rights causes), pushing for more humane standards and treatment where they’re being used when we feel it’s insufficient, and spreading awareness and education on good pet care practices. An example of an animal welfare organization would be the ASPCA.

How can I get one of my posts featured here?

There are several ways one of your posts could end up on here. I have the post submission option on, so one option would be to hit the Submit A Post button and post something here directly. Another way would be to tag one of your personal posts with fuckyeahanimalwelfare as I can easily search for and locate those to reblog them. A third would be to just tag your post animal welfare. I often search for this tag as well, though there’s less guarantee I’ll reblog as I won’t know whether you’ve just made the post to make the post or wanted it reblogged here, and I don’t reblog every post tagged animal welfare that I come across.
